Hope Lutheran School set out itsNativity scene for the second consecutive year last week with newadditions: a Star of Bethlehem and worshippers New Era Caps. The star was added by Eve and Tom Cooney, who crafted awood-carved and stained Jesus abercrombie online, Mary and Joseph for last year'sscene. Tom Cooney also carved the worshippers, which were paintedby students as part of a school fundraiser.Sunday morning, the holy family was gone. Only the metal stakesthat held them in place remained."Now, we have a scene of several cute child figures worshippinga couple of metal stakes," said Eve Cooney, who helps with theschool's Christmas celebration every year. The scene was intact Saturday evening after the school's annualcraft fair. Tom Cooney said a member of his church called Sundaymorning to report that the family was missing. He filed a reportwith St. Louis police. The figures, made of wood and stained to add color, cost about$100 for the supplies. They were weatherproofed and attached to the scene using metalstakes. The scene is outside the school at 5320 Brannon Avenue. The Joseph cutout was about 4 feet tall. Mary was about 3 feettall. Jesus and the manger were 2 feet tall and 2 feet wide. TomCooney said he's not upset about what it cost to make thefigures."It's the labor that goes into it," he said, adding the piecestook about 40 hours to make, beginning at the idea phase.Tom Cooney said the characters likely had been taken by adults,as they had been unhooked from their metal stands. The plastic tiesholding them down also had been cut."Kids would have just ripped them out of the ground," Cooneysaid. "(The thieves) have to have had cutting tools to get (thecharacters) out. They were clever about it. These were people whocame prepared."Tom Cooney said everyone is hoping the characters will bereturned. In the meantime, he said www.salesabercrombieclothing.com, he has been sketching and willbegin carving characters to replace the missing ones, he hopes byweek's end. Now, they are trying to figure out how to keep the other piecesin place. Tom Cooney said the idea of attaching the characters totheir metal stands has been tossed around, as well as drillingholes in the carvings. That would mess up the image, he said.Or, the school could just put them inside at the end of theday."That sort of defeats the purpose," he said. "Then you have 28worshippers ... worshipping nothing." Nativity Scene, Hope Lutheran School, Marlon A. WalkerRelated Topics Articles: -

The Rams had the first overall pick inthe 2010 draft. They made a rather simple decision to take theQB.Now all they have to do is put a franchise around him.And this is the hard part. The 7-2 Atlanta Falcons, who swoop into the Edward Jones Dome onSunday afternoon, offer a prime example of the way it's supposed tobe done. Their general manager, Thomas Dimitroff, rebuilt theFalcons with amazing speed and effectiveness. Dimitroff didn't takeover a team, he walked into a bad reality show.It was 2007. Atlanta's quarterback, Michael Vick, was lockedaway in federal prison www.northfaceparkasshop.com. The first-year coach, Bobby Petrino, weaseled his way into a college coaching job at Arkansas andabruptly bolted the Falcons after 13 games. Top cornerback DeAngeloHall was churning up the controversy in an effort to force a trade.Needing new leadership, Falcons owner Arthur Blank made a run atBill Parcells, but Parcells rejected Atlanta's overtures and signedon with the Miami Dolphins as president of football operations.Dimitroff was apparently Plan B. He was brought in from NewEngland, where he'd served as the Patriots' director of collegescouting, absorbing knowledge from Bill Belichick and Scott Pioli.Dimitroff needed a head coach and hired Mike Smith, who wasn'texactly a fast-track celebrity assistant promoted by nationalfootball pundits.Dimitroff didn't fall for the Rams' bluff in the 2008 draft; hedeclined to trade up for the Rams' No. 2 overall pick, stayed inthe No. 3 slot and drafted Boston College quarterback Matt Ryanwith that third choice. The 2008 draft also delivered startingoffensive tackle Sam Baker and starting linebacker Curtis Lofton.(And other goodies.) Next, Dimitroff made an aggressive move tosign free-agent running back Michael Turner. He trimmed the excessfrom the roster. He made the Falcons younger, faster andhungrier.Atlanta stunned the NFL in 2008 by going 11-5 and busting intothe playoffs. Smith was voted NFL coach of the year. Ryan was namedthe league's offensive rookie of the year The North Face Sale. And Dimitroff won theaward for NFL executive of the year.Dimitroff's planning for 2009 resulted in a trade for futureHall of Fame tight end Tony Gonzalez. The depth was furtherenhanced by another solid draft and low-key but meaningfulfree-agent signings. The '09 Falcons were taken down a notch byinjuries but still went 9-7. Before this season, Dimitroff madeanother substantial free-agent move, plucking cornerback DuntaRobinson away from Houston. And the Falcons used their first-roundpick in 2010 to take Missouri linebacker Sean Weatherspoon; he ledthe defense in tackles before injuring a knee.Since the beginning of the 2008 season the Falcons are 27-14,and they could be the NFC's best team right now. They're surely inthe conversation. Dimitroff had som |
