Birds, bats and butterflies have helped the owners of a Fylde holiday park to wing their way to victory in a major environmental award scheme.

The Johnson family of Little Orchard Caravan Park at Shorrocks Barn in Weeton, near Kirkham, have heard that their business has scooped the prestigious David Bellamy Conservation Award.

The park is based on part of a former mixed farm which has been in the Shorrock family since the 1920s, and is where Linda grew up.

It offers 30 fully-serviced pitches for the owners of touring caravans, motorhomes and tents - and over the past decade has won a loyal following of visitors from across the UK, and is currently expanding to 45 pitches.

Areas of woodland on the park are carefully maintained to provide a natural haven for wildlife, including hares, hedgehogs, foxes, shrews, pheasants and many other species.

David Bellamy said that Little Orchard is also a magnet for birdlife, encouraged by the park's siting of nesting boxes around the grounds, including those specially designed for owls and bats.

He also applauded the placing of "eco-piles" of timber around the park which are allowed to decay naturally in order to promote insect life as an extra feeding resource for birds.

Professor Bellamy made his award to the Little Orchard Caravan Park after it had received an independent audit from wildlife and conservation experts who highlighted the family's exceptional achievements.

They also noted the park's proliferation of wild flowers with high pollen-bearing blooms which attract a wide range of butterflies, including both common and less familiar types.

A wildlife pond on the park is also carefully managed by the family, and attracts many water fowl and other aquatic species including dragonflies.

“Although many of our guests do come here to enjoy a traditional country holiday, we can also offer an interesting environment to explore and make wildlife discoveries,� said Linda.
