Il consiste dans la rédaction des notices bibliographiques d'une part et des notices d'autorités d'autre part. La description bibliographique porte à la fois sur l'aspect matériel de l'ouvrage et sur son contenu pour permettre la recherche dans le catalogue. Pour l'indexation, qui consiste à trouver des mots sujets qui rendent compte du contenu intellectuel de l'ouvrage, on utilise un répertoire de mots matière (RAMEAU) et aussi la classification Dewey. L'ensemble de l'élaboration des notices est encadré par des normes internationales qui ont leur source dans les travaux de l'IFLA.
